Why Cedar

Log Dormer

Quality

At Moosehead Cedar Log Homes, we take great care in selecting the materials for our cedar log homes. We choose only the finest White Cedar stands in the northern regions surrounding Maine, and our logs are hand-selected, inspected, and held to a rigorous quality standard that only cedar can attain.

White Cedar is known for its slow growth characteristics and tight growth rings, which make it one of the most dimensionally-stable and durable woods on the planet. This makes it the ideal choice for log home construction, as it provides unparalleled strength and longevity. When you choose Moosehead Cedar Log Homes, you can trust that your cedar log home will be built from the highest-quality materials available, ensuring that it will stand the test of time and provide a comfortable, natural home for generations to come.

Dependable

White Cedar has a minimal amount of sapwood (approximately ¾ inch on a 10 inch diameter log). By removing the sapwood during the sawing and peeling process, you remove the part of the wood that discolors and decays – leaving you with a log that will last for generations.

Rated at over 1.4 R factor per inch, the insulation factor of White Cedar is among the highest of any wood species.

White Cedar contains natural oils and preservatives within the tree which makes it one of the most insect-repellent of all wood species. Its closed cellular structure inhibits mold and mildew, which can attack and decay many other types of wood – such as pine.

Long Lasting

At Moosehead Cedar Log Homes, we're committed to building environmentally-friendly and sustainable log homes that are safe for you and your family. That's why we use only the finest Northern White Cedar logs, which are renowned for their durability, stability, and natural beauty.

Unlike many other types of wood, Northern White Cedar is naturally resistant to decay, insects, and other pests, making it the ideal choice for log home construction. In fact, Northern White Cedar is one of the most durable woods on the planet, with a lifespan that can exceed 100 years.

In addition to its natural resistance to decay and pests, Northern White Cedar is also prized for its superior stability and dimensional accuracy. Our White Cedar logs are air dried for approximately six months to properly balance the moisture content, which minimizes any warping or shrinking. This ensures that your log home will remain structurally sound and visually stunning for generations to come.

By contrast, pine is a much softer wood that is prone to warping, twisting, and cracking over time. Pine is also much more susceptible to decay and insect damage, which can compromise the structural integrity of your log home and create health hazards for your family.

In short, by choosing Moosehead Cedar Log Homes and our Northern White Cedar logs, you can rest assured that you're making a wise investment in the long-term health and well-being of your family and the environment.
